New Arrivals
New arrivals spend 30 days in Quarantine while we assess their health and behavior, personalities, food and water intake, any challenges the chin may have. Each chinchilla has a wellness check during this period if they did not have one recently at a previous rescue.
If, after quarantine, the chinchilla is suitable for adoption, it will become available from our rescue at that time. If issues arise, we work intensively with the chinchilla to overcome them. In some cases, health or behavior may be such that we place the chinchilla in our Permanently Home family (sanctuary). These chinchillas will be available for sponsorship only, as placing them in an adoptive home will place unnecessary stress on both the chin and the adoptive family.

Pikachu came to us as a vet referral. He has malo (misaligned teeth), abscessed teeth and dental disease (overgrown roots). Pikachu's family loved him very much, and they followed our special Malo Diet with good results. His main caretaker was going to college, and so Pikachu came here where he can continue the intensive level of care and dietary intervention that he needs.

Emma is a spunky girl who came to us from her loving family. They rescued her from an abusive home 3 years ago and worked with her to try to help her overcome her past. Unfortunately, she had gone through so much by the time they'd rescued her that she has not been able to fully overcome it.

Yoshi came in with his friend Ziggy because his main caretaker went to college this fall. They had been told both boys are 3, but we have discovered Yoshi is at least 12, probably 15, but possibly even older. The boys had been fighting, and Yoshi has ended up with torn ears. He was in rougher shape than Ziggy was health-wise, and we decided to split them up. After living solo for a couple weeks, both boys began to flourish. Yoshi had tooth points and overgrown roots (Ziggy is perfectly healthy), so we placed him on our Malo Diet. He is in our Sanctuary automatically due to his age and health.

You may notice, in the pictures, that the chinchillas here have fleece sets in their cages. When a new chinchilla arrives here, we buy fleece and then sew him/her a hammock, pillow, house, fleece tunnel and two liners for his/her cage. We believe that the softness of fleece is reassuring to the chins, and that having such things helps smooth the transition to the new surroundings encountered here. Our belief has been furthered by the fact that each chinchilla that's come here has taken to its tunnel immediately, and for the first few weeks, will rarely leave it. These fleece sets belong to the chinchillas, and each pattern/color combination is unique to each chin.
